Well, I'm new to this blogging idea, and to be honest I'm really not even sure what it entails. However a few years ago I started to look into how I could program a Microprocessor chip to output a working DMX-512 signal. Initially I had some fun trying to remember some of the electronic basics, what would I need to program the microprocessors, where would I get them from, which one to use?
I managed to get a fair distance with the project, learning a number of things about PIC Microcontrollers, and associated basic programming. Throughout the process I kept thinking that I should be writing about the various stages I went through. In the back of my mind I guess I ideally thought that I should do a "How to program microprocessors for people who haven't a clue what to do or where to start".
Anyway I stopped my project when I started playing the evil World of Warcraft game a bit more seriously, and since then all the various bits of electronics I bought have all sat on the bookshelf gathering dust.
Now however I stopped playing Warcraft back in June, and I have started to get more back into my local Amateur Theatre company. This has revived my longing to continue and eventually finish my USB to DMX interface.
This time however I have decided to try and blog everything I do towards this aim. I guess we will now just have to see how I do with that aim in mind. I'll start by summarizing the basics I remember about electronics and Programming, and move on towards writing simple flashing LED programs and with luck we'll end up with a working DMX-512 interface.
If you are reading this, then I hope you find my endeavours useful and interesting. Hopefully it will help you work out what you will need for your own Microprocessor project.
